American Ingenuity
Posted by Mark on Mar 19 2004
Criticizing American built firearms from the savannahs of Africa isn't something that I know much about, having primarily used American firearms in North America my whole life.

During hunting season I carry my hunting rifle (a 30-06 or .338WM, depending on what my quarry is), a hunting license, a brown bear tag, and a harvesting attitude. With this combination, "bear trouble" is nearly impossible. It is, by definition, hunting opportunity.

From June to September I carry a Marlin Guide Gun in .450 Marlin. This rifle has been used on African game quite successfully. I've read reports of 45-70s with Buffalo Bore hardcast bullets going through one buffalo and killing another as well. This kind of power/penetration from a lever action carbine is more than adequate for North American bear defense; it's ideal.

Yet American ingenuity can even create other dangerous game options, especially in the big bear defense scenario.

I know some bowhunters who created (what they claim as) the ideal defense weapon for their needs.

They use Remington semi-auto or pump action rifles, cut the barrels down to 16", mount Remington 870 pistol-grip/folding stocks, an Aimpoint scope (with back-up iron sights), and a 10 round magazine.

This may not be the cat's meow for rogue elephants or hippos, but it looks to be a comforting piece to have if a bear decides to join you in a tree.
