Based upon talking with rockfish biologists and salty discussion groups in Oregon/Washington it seems the recompression technique of quickly resubmerging the fish back to the depths where it was caught may improve survival over gas bladder deflation. Oregon Sea Grant has a brochure that describes various rigs for accomplishing this. Also, I learned that deep dwelling fishes swim bladders contain inert gases (like argon), not just CO2. These gases could be important to survival and take a long time to replenish. Either technique is better than nothing. FYI, a mature yelloweye can live to be the ripe old age of 120 years.
