Best place to live
Posted by alaskanfishguides on Feb 20 2006
All things considered, YES. There is way more to consider before making a decision like that. First of all the options: Southeast panhandle, Kodiak, Bristol Bay, Prince William Sound, Kenai Peninsula, Anchorage/Mat-Su.
Next, what other factors for lifestyle? I.e. shopping, transportation, accessibility, remoteness, cost of living, occupation, property taxes, etc.
Here is my best attempt at objectivity:
SE Panhandle (i.e. Juneau, Sitka, Yakutak, etc): Excellent salt water fishing, and freshwater fishing. Excellent hunting opportunities. Limited access and high cost of living. Except for the larger communities, limited employment opportunities. Very small to intermediate sized communities. Tough weather.
Kodiak: Excellent salt water and fresh water fishing. Excellent hunting for blacktail deer, mt. goats and bears. Limited access, high cost of living, fair employment opportunities. Very small to intermediate communities. Tough weather.
Bristol Bay: Excellent fresh water fishing, limited salt water fishing. Fair-excellent hunting for caribou (depending on herd), limited access, high cost of living, limited employment opportunities, tough weather. Remote, small and very close communities.
Prince William Sound (i.e. Cordova, Valdez): Excellent salt water fishing, excellent fresh water fishing. Limited to good access. Higher cost of living. Smaller communities. Tough weather.
Kenai Peninsula: Excellent fresh water and salt water fishing. Good hunting opportunities. Easy access. Intermediate cost of living. Good employment opportunities. Small to intermediate communities. Moderate weather. However can be very crowded during fishing season.
Anchorage/ Mat-Su: Excellent fresh water fishing. No salt water fishing. Excellent hunting opportunities. Easy access. Lower cost of living. Excellent employment opportunities. Intermediate communities to larger Metro areas. Moderate weather. Also can be crowded during fishing season.
Other things to consider is infastructure like schools, hospitals and emergency servcies. Believe it or not, there are many areas of this state that do not have fire protection and very limited emergency services and police protection.
If I were considering a move to Alaska, there are so many other questions to ask before deciding on a location. Please understand that this response is my opinion and others may either add or detract from my comments ... Good luck.
