you might also head to fish and game off of college.  Get a copy of all the topo's.  I believe they also have a small pamphlet on the stocked lakes within 200 miles of Fairbanks.  Someplace to start.  

You can't go wrong on birch however don't expect to pull out anything overly large.  My wife and I did well on char catching a couple that pushed 16-17"es.   Fun day overall.

Check out the iceshanty forum FG posted, there is a small group that regularly post on the AK forum.  Sure wish I could get these guys in the chat room once in awhile.
