I standardize on the 4000 moocher and use a rod having a suitable reel seat - #1 importance...
But for line I run 80-100 lb. spectra backing, fly-line, short flo-coated co-poly leader, & sometimes an additional stout strand of lesser dia.
Fly line is easier to manipulate.
(less dangerous until you reach the spectra backing --- hopefullly you are well in control of your Moocher by then - I did not say fish tho'!)
For Salmon and bigger Trout or Char in fast deeper water - I like the Chuck & Duck line - it's $$$, kinda weird to cast (yes, toss like a train & 4 sure duck technique - it realllly rolls out heavy yet still very smoothly)--- no lead needed. You can also use some intermediate sink or other lines I like are ghost tips or clear lines then you can lead up if needed.
