I think the answer to that is by not bringing enough rod (both size and number of rods) and ending up either having to buy more up here, or not being able to fish for some time. Definitely recommend the 10 weight for kings, if not more. The 5 wt is ideal too for rainbows and dollies, grayling, etc. The 5 may be light for pinks (other than playing them a long time), but you'd likely toss them over your shoulder with a 10 wt. I would definitely recommend something in between, say a 7 or 8. That would also help with some of the bigger rainbows. I am currently building a 7 wt. that I hope to use for reds, pinks, and rainbows. I got the blank from Hook and Hackle, all parts for about $125. Not too bad for IM8 blank, very fast action, lifetime warranty. My favorite rods are St. Croix Ultra Legends, but some of these IM8's serve as great backups, which I have found are important in Alaska.
