salmon

Nothing to argue with here, except you also have to make allowance for the water.  On a big river like the Kenai and especially with heavy lines I'm happier with an 11 for kings, and happiest with a 12.  Doesn't mean the 12 is useful anywhere else, but big fish in big water can wrap a 10 around your neck.

Knock the kings off the list, and it's pretty easy to recommend an 8, again within the limits of average rivers.  If you already had a 7 in your collection for example, it would be pretty easy to recommend that you go ahead and built a 10 or 11 and bring the 7 with you, too.

Then again, if you also have a 5 or even a 4, I'd sure bring that along too for pinks.  Talk about fun!

There's no way you can make one rod do all things for all salmon on all rivers without making compromises somewhere.  It's more sensible to look at your existing collection and think in terms of adding to that, while bringing along a range of rods.  In an ideal world your choice of which big rod would also be based upon what uses you would have for it when the salmon aren't in front of you.
