TH,  you are asking a really broad question, but you did narrow it down a little when you mentioned spin-casting. I suggest going to the bookstore link (upper left of the web page) and investing in a couple of books to help you with your choices. I use mainly fly gear for freshwater fishing up here. Spinners and spoons will be your mainstay with the SC gear, Mepps are good for grayling in red/black/brown and combinations. Silver spoonswith red, orange, or green in them can be good at times. Use Pixies, Croc spoons, Johnson silver minnows.
Red salmon can be a challenge to get to bite anything IMO.
Trout and salmon are both classed as salmonids, but rainbows that make salt water runs are termed steelhead.  have a great trip up.  Kid
