Lost pots
Posted by B_M on Jan 26 2006
jrogers brings up a good point when he shares his experience with lost pots.  While some pots have certainly been stolen out there, there are others that are either sunk or float away because they're set in water that is too deep.  In the past two summers I have found THREE different buoys floating out in the Port Wells area with shrimp pots attached.  Each time they had about 100 feet of rope and were drifting in over 1000' of water.  People getting into shrimping want to save a little money on rope or buoys, but end up losing it all by not having enough depth or simply not checking their charts.  Sheesh.

If you're going to do it, I recommend getting 5-600' of rope.  We set our pots at about that depth and do way better than at shallower depths.  Also, if you're concerned about theft I would set my pots either within sight of Whittier (people might be too scared of being caught to steal them, and the shrimping can be surprisingly good) or as far away as you can get.  We set ours about 40-50 miles out of town and never have a problem.

Like jrogers said, take a look in the archives.  Lots of info there.

Good luck!

-Brian
