You are so right in that with a little effort one can find the Alaska Experience for a reasonable cost. You I assume from experience have chosen to be in state for three weeks. This makes rooting around to find the "fresher" water less hectic. Most try to get it all in a week and can only see the well travel areas. There a many books out there that push "Alaska on a budget" and some are newer and have up to dated info so like you said do your research.
I hope that your trip is all that you hope and you and yours stay safe. Please respect our state and take what you bring back out. With the influx of transients the highways and waterways tend to get marred by the increase traffic.
