Doing the homework
Posted by floridafisherman on Jan 18 2006
I'm doing my homework/research for my third trip to the Great Land.  I have read just about all the archives on this forum and others and have purchased and studied a lot of the suggested books.  One notion that keeps reoccuring is the idea that a quality fishing trip cannot be done from the road.  I realize Alaska and its residents are very dependent on tourism and many guides, lodge owners, and bush pilots make thier living from tourism.  While I'll not dispute the obvious fact that "getting away" from other fisherman is only a short flight away from Anchorage, I take exception to the often stated concept that I must "lower my expectations" and "be willing to participate in combat fishing". If one is willing to spend some time reading, studying some maps, and putting a good plan together it is entirely possible to find solitude and rivers, streams, and lakes abundant with willing fish.  My trip last summer was testament to that as will next summers trip.  Most people are given the impression that unless you have four or five grand to spend on a trip it is not possible to experience Alaska.  Most people don't have that kind of money and therefore give little consideration to ever comming to Alaska. My budget for this years trip is less than three thousand dollars for three people for three weeks. It allows for air tickets from Orlando, rental vehicle, food, licenses, camping fees, a seven day  float trip, sightseeing ect.  This years trip will not find me at the Russian/Kenai confluence, or for that matter any of the confluences on the Parks highway.  I choose to seek the less traveled roads and trails and I have a growing list of those places!
