bear cubs
Posted by alaskanfishguides on Jan 11 2006
There seems to be a notion that these bears cannot fend for themselves.  I must differ.  I watched and photographed these bears in october.  There were not any fishers except for one group in a drift boat and these bears were doing just fine.  They were fishing and catching!

Though I don't have any new photo's of these bears (probably napping right now) you may wish to review the ones that I do have.  http://www.alaskanfishguides.com/gallery.htm

The very first photo in the gallery shows one of the cubs up to its neck fishing and then the following shows it eating its catch.  They look very fat and very healthy.

Naturally, these bears will look for the easy meal and certainly have been taught to not fear humans.  I don't have a lot of confidence that they will survive any kind of coexistence however.  It is not on their account, rather a person who is either frightened or thinks it sport to shoot these bears.  I believe that it is possible to fish together with the bears.  If they want your rock, give it to them and enjoy the show.  If they want your fish, there are plenty more where those came from.  Don't keep your fish in your pack and the bears won't chew it up.

These guys will simply be bears and do what bears do, eat fish and anything else that looks tasty.  If we can tolerate that and give them the room that they desire, we can all get along.  Indeed, the mother bear coexisted for years at Russian River until someone thought it fun to shoot her and a cub with a light caliber weapon.  That is the problem.  By the way, I am a proud gun owner and believe in the importance of ethical and practical hunting. IMHO
