Places to fish without a guide
Posted by Steelieguy on Jan 11 2006
I would fish my way down the Peninsula to Homer.
1. Bird Creek - 30 minutes s. of Anchorage. Pinks and Silver will be available in July & Aug. Less than a mile of river to fish, and the banks can get really muddy.
2. Ressurection Creek - In Hope, should be good for Pinks, and Silvers starting to show up. Fish above the bridge.
3. Quartz Creek - Upper Kenai River stretch. Sockeye salmon going up the river to spawn. Good fly fishng for Rainbow trout and Dolly Varden.
4. Russian River (Kenai river confluence) Should be really good for Sockeye Salmon. It's a party (combat fishing) and you just got get in on the action. Can be a lot of fun. Some fish will bite, and some will be lined or snagged do to the volume of fish.
5. Bing's Landing - Excellent for sockeye salmon. Get their early to get a rock to stand on.
6. Swiftwater park in Soldotna good for Sockeye, Pinks, & Silvers.
7. Centennial Park - below the Soldotna bridge. This is one of the best places to fish for Sockeye, Pinks and Silvers. Good access, and plenty of room to fish up and down river. The fish are super fresh in this section of river.
8. Slikok Creek - below Centennial Park is a good place to get away from the crowds. Good King Salmon, Sockeye, Pinks & Silvers.
9. Kasilof River - Decent Silver fishing below Crooked Creek campground.
10. Ninilchik River - I believe on Aug 1st the river opens up for Silver fishing. Check the regs to be sure.
11. Anchor River - Pinks, Dollies, and Silvers. Check the regs on the Silvers.
12. Homer Spit should be good for Silvers on the high tide. Fish roe on a bobber on the high slack tide by the jetty mouth.
13. Halibut Charter - Expect a long boat ride to the spots with the big fish weather permiting. Also a good chance of getting Silver salmon.
14. There good places to hike & fish on the other side of the bay in Homer. Take a water taxi to China Poot trail or Halibut Cove.
