Headed for trouble
Posted by Michael Strahan on Jan 10 2006
AA-

I've floated that section of river many times and have seen lots of bears there over the years.  I'm no expert, and I'm certainly not defending the individual who shot that sow, but I do believe those bears were headed for trouble anyway.  There are two cubs left now, and they spent an unusual length of time hanging around the Kenai / Russian area longer than I've seen bears stick around the area this year.  It wouldn't surprise me to see them get shot next season too.  They're just too casual around people.  They appear to have no fear (not even a healthy respect) of people.  It's just a matter of time.

When the cubs were younger, momma would drop them off at the bluff just downstream of the ferry crossing and go back in the woods while the cubs walked along the riverbank grabbing everyone's fish.  They learned that people are a good source of fresh salmon and as a result I don't beleive they became very good fishermen themselves.  So watch what happens next season.  They'll be back, bigger than ever, and will gradually become more of a nuisance until either someone gets hurt or they get shot.

It's an unfortunate situation, and one for which people bear at least part of the blame.
