The shooter of the sow at the Russian confluence area last summer has been adjudicated with 3 years probation, 10 days in jail, and $2,800.00 in fines. He was found guilty of 3 counts; taking a bear in closed season, taking a bear in a closed area, and shooting a sow with cubs.

When I first came to Alaska in 1988 I had been in the state only 14 hours and had my fist bear encounter at that very same spot. It was a sow with 2 cubs and I've never forgotten the majesty of that moment.

Maybe the jail time will do the shooter a little good as he reflects upon destroying similar magic moments for both animal and man...
