5WT Fly Reel
Posted by BlueMoose on Jan 06 2006
AKFG comments are note worthy.  It has been my observation over the years that most posted WT's on Fly Rods and Reels are more a guide than completely accurate.  General rule of thumb is one up and or one down for rods and reels or should I say you have flexibility in your choices should you choose so. I know there are anglers out there you disagree which is fine.  I build on a average of 60 fly rods a year and utilize blanks from all manufactures you do have a choice of matching up verses a 5wt.

One of these days I will get off my duff and write a book called sorting through the Crap!

Standard Trout Fly Rod for Bigger Rainbows is in the 9ft to 9ft 6in range and is a 6W or 7W on a standard river such as the Willow.  Yes you can use a 5W however fish mortality rates increase as we the angler play the poor thing to death on lighter equipment.

Fly Rod Choices again AKFG has offered a decent choice with a warranty to boot!  They are made in Korea if that does not bother you, and they are decent rods.  Note the word Decent! As for as spending your money it is not an overall bad choice.

Fly Lines personal Choice that matches your income!  Again people will disagree with this statement and will swear the fly line makes the entire process better. I have found a standard Cortland 333 for $29.00 if taken care off will meet most anglers needs if economics is an issue. I have everything from Rio, Teeny, Orvis etc.. all the way down to the Cortland 333.  If your bouncing lead or beads the 333 will work fine. If your making fine presentation and long cast then I would agree they are not the best choice for the job.

Bottom Line in my opinion 9ft 6W with a WFF6W Line will get you close to playing the game on the Kenai.

Best of luck and Tight Lines

Best wishes.
