Biting
Posted by covert80 on Jul 28 2005
Actually none of the pacific salmon really feed once they hit freshwater. Kings, silvers, pinks, and chums commonly strike, although the exact reason is unknown. Reds are the least aggressive. They are not feeding and almost never bite. The technique used to catch them I have heard referred to as "lining", "snagging them in the mouth", or "luck".

What is happening goes something like this: sockeyes run relatively near the bank and right off of the bottom. By using a fly that has minimal drag, is roughly 18" away from the weights, and using plenty of weight (to ensure you are actually skipping heavily along the bottom), your line between the fly and the sinkers will float through their mouth. This generally occurs near the end of the drift due to the dynamics of the motion. The trick is learning what it feels like when this happens (if you cannot see the fish and the fly, then you can time your hookset to coincide with when the fly floats through the mouth). Those who have not mastered the trick you will see slamming the hookset at the end of every drift. This too is successful but results in more snagged fish.

It really is a different ballgame than getter trout to rise to a fly or jigging bass........
