Reds Late July
Posted by AK-TEX-OR on Jun 30 2005
Not to be a smart-ass, but some years yes, some years no...as far as sockeye goes in Soldotna. Depends on the timing of the run. To be honest, last year I had the best sockeye fishing of the year in Soldotna between Aug2nd-Aug6th. We were still seeing 40K fish per day (with a few silvers mixed in), and all of the tourists had already gone home or moved upriver.

If the fishing isn't hot in Soldotna at that time, move upriver to the Russian/Kenai confluence and they will be there. The downside is that at that point in the run they are about 2 pounds lighter and starting to turn red. But there will be plenty of fresh ones to hook into to.

I guess my basic point is that there will be fish at that time in pretty good numbers....whether or not they'll still be thick in the lower river is something you'll have to figure out on a daily basis at that point in the run. But hey, the Russian is only a 45minute drive north.

Regarding silvers....they will be in the lower river at that point in the run. They are more easily caught from a boat, but bank anglers take a fair share as well. Dollies and rainbows are present as well. Although, the highest concentration of those will be behind the spawning sockeye. I've always had better success for rainbows and dollies upriver in the russian/confluence area...

If possible during your trip track the sonar count numbers to find out how the run is shaping up. I've found that 20K fish per day is a good count for fishing the lower river. If the counts are lower than that consider moving upriver towards the russian.

I believe the sonar count number is 907-262-9611

I'm leaving sunday for 7weeks of fishing on the kenai. I'll be fishing/tracking the sockeye run from start to finish. Tentatively I usually plan to be in soldotna thru the end of july, then the first week of august is a "transition" week...meaning I either fish soldotna or the Russian depending on where the run is at.

Anyways, hope that helps.
