Found it! Black Hackle Peacock
Posted by Michael Strahan on Jun 28 2005
Fishguides,
Thanks for the info- The fly I'm thinking of is not a Griffith's Gnat, but that sure looks like a dandy for grayling. I'll have to try it! The main differences are that the Griffith's has a palmered hackle and no tail. The pattern reminds me of a Wooly Worm, actually.
I went online and found the one I'm thinking of. It's called a "Black Hackle Peacock". Here's a link- < http://www.ality.org/wordpress/?page_id=132 >. I've tied them with black hackle, brown hackle, and grizzly hackle. The ones that seem to work best for me use really webby hen hackle that absorbs water well. Fish it subsurface or drag it to make a wake as you mentioned earlier. The peacock herl body gives the fly a sparkle unlike anything else. It's a handy fly to fall back on when other patterns don't seem to produce. I've also tied them with red hackle tails, or even mallard dyed red. I think the red tail is more of an attractant for fishermen perhaps than anything else. For grayling it's probably not important and I'd go with hackle fibers that are the same color as the main hackle.
Hope this helps!
-Mike
