super grayling flies
Posted by Max on Jun 28 2005
I realize that probably just about any fly would work for grayling.  However two stood out to me.  A #12 or 14 fox squirrel nymph(tied extra spiky).  And as a fly you could fish wet or dry, Max's mosquito.  Recipe as follows:

Hook: TMC 100 or 101 #14 or 16

Rib: Black mono-cord lacquered with head cement to make it not unravel when you wrap.

Body: Heavy duty white thread wound tight creating a slightly tapered body front to back.  Then with a red magic marker color the body.  I tried using red thread, but it looks flat.  The rib being lacquered won’t splay apart.  It will create a little bump along the body.  With the red marker and then the black rib it gives it almost an 3D effect like the natural.  After the rib is wrapped give the body a light coat of clear nail polish or head cement just to keep everything  exactly where it is.  I realize that this is a lot to go through for a body but it really looks nice when it’s finished.

Hackle: Grizzly neck hackle for dries, or super deadly grizzly soft hackle for a wet fly.

I really liked it fished wet just under the surface with the softhackle.  I believe it imitates a dead mosquito very well.  So did the grayling along the Denali.  You can grease the leader to within a couple inches of the fly.  This will let you easily see the take.

FISH ON!!!!
