Grayling Fly Patterns Too!
Posted by Michael Strahan on Jun 27 2005
Joe:
With the additional comment on flies for grayling, here's my list:
DRY FLIES
Mosquito, Black Gnat, Humpy, Elk Hair Caddis.
WET FLIES
Bead Head Nymphs, Hare's Ear, Black Gnat, and a little fly (I can't remember the name) with a peacock herl body and soft black hen hackle.
You should carry sizes from 10 to 18 or so. You could also use midges down to size 22, I suppose, but grayling are not generally too picky. The relatively short season here makes them more aggressive than trout in the lower 48 states that have access to so much more feeding opportunities. That's my take anyway.
I agree with Alaskafishguides that you can fish these on spinning tackle. You might try a bubble float. I like the clear ones that have a piece of rubber tubing through the center. You just slip the bubble on your line, slide it down as far as you want it to be from your fly, twist it on and heave-ho. Works great.
Regards,
-Mike
