Kustatan Silvers
Posted by bakerb on Apr 29 2005
Joe,
The Kustatan River will host only Silver Salmon during your visit. You will probably catch a few Dolly Varden on the Salmon Eggs, maybe even a Rainbow Trout or two.
I hope you are not expecting solitude on the Kustatan. The Kustatan is a "Fly-in", but it is just a short hop from Soldotna and gets lots of traffic. There are generally plenty of fish to share, but you will be sharing them.
Fish can be caught on flies and hardware, but the Salmon Egg setup described by your guide will get the most hook-ups (due to water clarity). If you want to attempt flies, find a shallow sandbar where the Silvers are creating a wake as they pass by. Try to swing an ESL in front of them in the shallow water (they won't see it in the deep water). It is not easy, but it can be done and the Kustatan Silvers are pretty hot fish - worth the effort on a Fly Rod.
