Herring Jigging
Posted by Allan on Apr 22 2005
I've never fished herring in Alaska before, but growing up in the puget sound area (Seattle) we fished them from the docks all the time. Just hook up a herring/smelt jig with a little 1 or 1/2 ounce weight under it. I don't know if chumming here is legal, but if so, make some up and throw it off the docks. We always fished the last part of high tide and high slack. So anyhow, then we just fling the jig a little ways off the dock. Then we just jig it short and hard on it's way back to the dock, reeling in the slack as well. About half the fish we caught were snagged and half ate the little fly looking jigs. Anyhow, when fishing is hot, it can be a lot of fun. Good luck.
