[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] Fishing license prices Posted by Mel Roe on Apr 21 2005 I think we need to address what percentage of fish are taken by sport fisherman and what percentage are taken commercially and then divide the cost of new fish hatcheries and the such accordingly. If commercial fisherman take 80% of the salmon and halibut then should they not be 80% responsible for maintaining the resource? The sport fisherman seem to bear most of the burden financially and the commercial fleet gains the most from it. Take the charter IFQ program for example. Sport fishing side of the house pays for their fishing licenses which allows them to take 2 fish per day. If the new charter IFQ's go into effect only individuals with boats, friends with boats or people who can afford several hundred dollars a day will be the only ones able to catch those fish. My fear is the state will count on as many licenses as they have sold in the past and increase the amount based on that number and there stands to be a significant amount fewer licenses actually issued do the fact that people cannot get a charter. If I have been vague I feel the sport fisherman are already paying their fair share and the money needs to come from the commercial side. I would encourage all to write letters to their senators and congressman and let them know your feelings and don't wait until it is too late to make a difference.
