More Bear Tips

My advice for travelling in bear country is to always take someone who is slower that you!!! If they are faster, shoot 'em in the foot.
Seriously, there can be large hungry bears on the Upper Russian during July (mid-late) because that is when the Red Salmon peak. The good news is the bears are usually satisfied with the fish that they catch and eat.
The only problem you will run into will be surprising the bear and causing a defensive attack. Nevertheless, the chances of that happening with a large group is nil to none.
Keep a clean camp, and yes, I have heard of and know people who use the battery powered electric fence, however this can be fairly heavy to pack along with camp.
The pepper sprays seem to work against brown bears, but not blacks. Best advice is to never cook or eat in your tent and keep the camp area clean and the bears will leave you alone.
I have fished these areas for about 25 years and have never had a problem with the bears. They have been around and even through camp, but have never had an unpleasant experience.
I do guide hike out fishing trips to these areas if you are interested. You can visit my web site and we can talk about group rates... www.alaskanfishguides.com
