Yukatat
Posted by AlaskanAuthor on Feb 25 2005
Mike,
I recently completed research in this region for the Outdoors Directory and it should come up in the AREAS button within a week. I have not been there, so perhaps some who have will respond to your post.
I found no data on campgrounds, but as in most of AK, if you want to do it on public land and you are self-equipped, you undoubtedly can. Be bear aware; data supported this, and also expect to get wet as the region averages 132 inches of rain per year.
There are plenty of accomodations in Yukatat, but you had better seek them and reserve them early if you want a shot at them. Yukatat, though off the beaten path, is a favored destination due to the Situk and its steelhead population.
There is a road system there that can bring you to what Yukatat has to offer in terms of fresh water opportunity. And there is also a car rental in the village. Community websites, and there are 2 of them dedicated to the area, are very comprehensive.
In conversing with others who have been there, the consensus is that a guide is recommended for the first-timer. The Situk is best met via a float trip that is a full day journey, and the guides know all the holes along the stretch.
Hope this assists you.
