shrimp

Well, if you're just visiting the area, finding the appropriate gear will likely be the tough part.  Do you have someone to contact?  Maybe you can talk someone into renting you some shrimp pots.  Buying some for only two weeks seems like a bit much, especially since you'll also need buoys, rope, etc.

Another question:  Are you a resident?  I believe that only residents can fish for shrimp in Alaska.  Furthermore, you need to register your pots to your name and to the particular boat you're using.  (At least those are the regs in Prince William Sound)  So, all of this could be tricky

However, assuming you can jump through all of the hoops to get ready, catching shrimp should be fairly easy.  Drop your pots in 100-600 feet of water, preferably near a rocky outcropping.  Muddy bottoms don't hold as many shrimp, so stay away from really flat bottoms.  For bait it is probably easiest to stuff your bait jar with herring.  If you're doing some salmon fishing at the time, you can also throw in the head and filleted carcass to add to the smell.  I've also heard of people using slightly open cans of wet cat food, but I've never tried it myself.  Basically, make the pots as stinky as possible.  Then leave them down overnight and pull up the bounty the next morning.  Good luck!
