Cruise Ship Fishing...
Posted by AlaskanAuthor on Feb 23 2005
Due to the abundance of persons who arrive in these ports, the charter boat industries pretty much have a captured audience. Prices tend to be high, but you certainly can be put on the fish.
Of your two stops, my recommendation would be to fish Juneau due to the fact that your ship will tie longer there than in Skagway. You can find your charter in Juneau by searching out a couple of fine websites with keyword searches containing "Juneau fishing" or "Juneau, AK". King salmon start to peak in saltwater during May, and your opportunity should be pretty good. As well, check out Juneau by hitting the AREAS button right on this site.
Skagway, by far, is well worth touring instead of fishing. The Chilcoot Rail Trip is fameous, and should not be missed. As well, the town is a downright hoot and well worth your time. One of the smartest things I ever did as a cruise ship tourist was to hike through town, cut through the railroad "graveyard" (the old steamers are still there) and reach the cemetary and waterfall and then return to the dock.
If your catch is good you can bring it right on board and they will prepare it for your table. Talk about being a star! There's a memory you'll never forget.
Enjoy your cruise.
