Why would it make a difference what depth you are fishing if you are using a level wind reel? The level wind doesnt have as thing to do with depth or how much line the reel can hold. You can still use your thumb for additional pressure. A level wind does not lessen or increase your chance of a birds nest. That is caused by the spool tension being to loose.
