Leeches bait?

I notice that there are leeches in alot of the lakes and rivers around the state. Has anyone ever used live or artificial leeches and been successful for any species in lakes? I've use leech flies while fly fishing and was very successful. I am actually looking to use them for Lake Trout and lake Char. Any info on fishing with leeches would be greatly appreciated.
