Diesel, otherwise you will be spending fortune on gas. If the boat weighs more than 5,000 pounds get something along the line of a Ford Superduty F250-350. If Ford is not your type pick a comparable truck from GM or Dodge.
Make sure the trailer is equipped with brakes on all the axles, discs if possible, and also go with electric brakes over surge. Pulling a heavy load is easy. Stopping it is not.
