Kodiak
Posted by Paul H on Feb 15 2006
I haven't been to Southeast, as it would certainly contend, but to me Kodiak is a very special place.  You can get into world class bottom fish 1/2 hour from the harbor, most other fishing locals require much longer runs.  You also have all sorts of salmon to contend with in the various river systems.  The folks in Kodiak are super, and I love the town.

Since the fish are so close in, I'd look at a trawler.  No need to have big gas guzzling engines when a diesel will cruise you at 7-8 knots and sip fuel, and you'll still have plenty of time to fish on a day trip.  When the weather comes up you'll just bob along, and you'll have enough room to confortably hunker down should you have to wade out a storm in a protected cove.
