Zippers
Posted by Richard Ragan on Aug 23 2005
The zippers can and do come partially “undone”, although usually through mishandling.
The last time I shipped my raft home from AK via the USPS the outer portion of the zipper had come undone. This was probably my fault. I had rolled the tube of my 18’ cataraft zipper side out and rolled up very tight to fit into a duffel bag. That left the zipper exposed to impact and bending at very sharp angles.
I fixed the zipper by removing the stainless end cap. (two 3/8 or 5/16 nuts with allen head screws) Then I backed ½ of the zipper car off the tube and that unzipped the bottom and top portion of the zipper. Then I just zipped it up like you would your jacket of pants being VERY CAREFUL not to have the remaining car come off the zipper. Then I locked the two cars back together with the ring they came with and just backed the zipper up! This did take several tries and a bit of tugging but it did work well. After replacing the end cap I placed the allen wrench and socket in my emergency kit!!!!!
I know it’s a bit late but I hope it helps,
Richard
