Inflatable jet design
Posted by 180pilot on Jul 19 2005
I know exactly what you are saying, And that's why I haven't mailed a check for a Jet Ranger yet.  I've owned a number of inflatables in the last 20 years, from sport types to rafts to kayaks.  I believe this type of inflatable jet has such a small market, that all the science needed to stiffen the hull and reduce drag, but still have a fold up rig, is in it's infancy.  Like an aircraft, if the drag can be reduced, with  the lighter weight of the inflatable, it will need less thrust to perform.  That's why I'm elated that Aire has gotten into the contest, as they would have significant resources to indulge in development.  They can build an incredibly stiff and smooth hull.   But, they seem perhaps a little apprehensive about how big a market such a boat would have.  When, I visited them, the Proto Type Power Traveler was in a box and put away. They inflated it for me to inspect.  Building and selling all their other designs is of higher priority, which is understandable.  How many Americans carry jet boats in airplanes?????????  But, I believe such a craft could be used in a much wider market if they can make it perform, including rescue work, as the recent RIB designs have demonstrated. Another aspect is that the pump manufacturer, if you read their website, they have discounted the inflatable hull from the get-go. Who knows, perhaps a redesign or modification of the intake of the pump itself could help in some way?  When I informed the staff at OBJ about the Jet Ranger, some time ago, they acted as if they had not heard of it yet??????  These two industries don't seem to work together like hard boat manufacturers and outboard makers do.

Thanks for your information, and about the outfitter and the reported 4 passengers,.. they stated they were planing in shallow  water...I'm thinking now, two light adults and two children????

I'll be watching all the developments.

Regards
