Fishing deck
Posted by Paul H on Jun 21 2005
Thanks.

I made it down to the show as well, and yes it seems everyone is running a large single and a kicker, including Renn.  At first I was considering twin Honda 50's for the widebody, and that is still a good choice, but an extra $2k+ initially, extra fuel, etc.  Also as you'll note on my boat I made a narrow splashwell so I can fish all the way to the transom on the sides.  A full width cutout required for twins would cost me an extra 1 1/2 to 2 feet of fishing deck, almost making the boat a two person fishing boat vs having room for 4.  That isn't an issue for commercial boats, but it did allow me to get the most out of my boat.

The way I look at it is if conditions are bad enough that it would be unsafe to expect the kicker to get me back in, I really ought not to be out there in the first place, but then again things can get nasty in a hurry despite the best laid plans.

I'd definately recomend getting one of Neal's kits if you decide to build.  He uses the best wood you can get, the kit quality is outstanding, and he's a great guy to deal with.  I didn't go with a kit because they weren't out when I started building, but I have been getting my epoxy and a few additional sheets of ply from him.

Other then my wife helping me flip the hull over, I've built it completely myself, so a partner isn't needed, though one would have been appreciated more than on one occasion.
