Anchor Retrieval Strong Tides
Posted by Cutter on May 25 2005
Just a quick question on the “proper” set up for setting and retrieving your anchor set in Cook Inlet or any other “Strong Tidal” areas.   I have never had a problem retrieving anchors in Cook Inlet before this last weekend.    I use a buoy ring that is always affixed to the anchor line and is free floating the entire distance of the Anchor rope.  When fishing in 100- 125’ of water I will usually let out 200 – 250' feet to ensure that we wont have any “sinking” possibilities.  The problem this week was getting to buoy to run out when motoring forward due to massive current.   My buoy is always close to the boat when anchored, but when I see other charter outfits out there, their buoy’s always seem to be stationary 50 – 100 yards in front of their boat…I wonder if this is similar to a slip buoy that is fixed at a certain point so as to make the buoy retrieval easier….as it is. I got her unhooked, but not before completely ruining the anchor due to a severe bend on the main stem.  Would appreciate your sharing how you are doing it.  I know of one other boat near mine that left their anchor in until the slack tide because they could not get it unhooked.
