Moving to AK and need boat advice
Posted by jssbastiat on May 24 2005
hi,
I"m moving from dallas to the fairbanks area in july.  I have a question...here in texas i use a 3.5 hp merc to get my 14 ft v-hull alum boat up the rivers/lakes inorder to get away from other hunters...i also have a 4 wheeler that is nice...

so, will my setup be of use in the fairbanks area?  Are the rivers too shallow/rough?  I can buy my buddies 10 hp if the 3.5 merc is not enough...can i put in on a lake and get to the other side, upriver, etc for good hunting...

OR, !!!! I can buy a nice, sea worthy inflatable 12 ft boat and put either my 3.5 hp or a 10 hp on it...it has a tough plastic bottom....no joke...my buddy has it cheap, never used and it is a tough one...will this be of better use to use my 4 wheeler to get out further into the bush and then lock the 4 wheeler up to a tree, inflate the boat, stick the motor on and get going deeper?..

What rivers/lakes should i look at when i visit there june 12-18?  O nice guy from here has suggested that Valdez is a good place for my setup?...

any help greatly appreciated..i should sign a teaching job near fairbanks june 18...i want to teach in a small community within 2 hrs of fairbanks..is there cheap cabins to lease out there?

thanks,
scotty starr
