motors on a canoe

I use an electric motor on mine all the time.  It works well for side mount.

I also use a 3 HP motor on side mount and I put it as far back as I can...no problem.

I also have a square stern 17 foot that works well with a 5-6hp.  I think I wouldn't go more than 3 HP for side mount.  It pushes a canoe along fine and should be all you need.

I have also used square stern grumman freighters with a lift.  THAT is the way to go for serious moose hunting in places you need to drag the canoe over beaver dams etc...it can get places a jet boat can't.
