Dual batteries

So I just purchased a used skiff with a 50 hp Johnson outboard. I only has one battery. My buddy insist that I get another battery and intall a battery switch.
So I did a little research on the subjuct and there seems to be a thousand different ways to go about this.
the only "house" electronics I have aboard is depth finder, VHF, and bilge pump.
So if I get another battery and switch, will the alternator in my 1996 johnson be able to recharge both of them?
Do I wire just the electronic to one and the starter to the other? What position does the swich need to be on to charge?
Would it be ok to buy one new battery and use it w/ the older one (2 yrs) that is already aboard.
As You can see I am more confused now than I was when I began. Please any and all help is very appreciated.
