The gearing of the motor is critical along with the size of the prop. Once you reach a speed of about 6-7 mph you simply will not gain any more with a bigger motor. At low speeds our boats are simply another form of displacement hull. A kicker is incapable of getting it up on step. I would equate it with using low range in a 4 wheel drive. After researching this issue I have found out the Yamaha High Thrust motors have a much lower gearing and bigger props than the Honda's. One of the forum members who has a boat almost identical to the 24 footer I am getting informed me he has the 10 HP Honda and his friend has the 8 HP Yamaha on a 27 foot heavier boat. He said his friends boat runs rings around his when they are only using the kickers. Know I know why the Yamaha HT thrust models are so popular.
