Hands on!

Yes - there are ways to hone your skills w/ busineses like Jeff refered to.
I offer instruction as well in May through first week of June, but it does not look like that fits into you time-frame.
The cost is $220 per long, full day covering swift water training including rescue, primary & secondary strokes kayaking and oar-rigged rafting, as well as basic river running dynamics. As a side of the program - I give you info on specific Alaska backcountry tips like gear selection, get you thinking on wilderness terms instead of roadside tactics, and make it all inclusive so you do not have to track down odds & ends.
My best advice tho' is to get some great basic training, learn to respect the power of water, and build hands on mileage by trying to get a job on the rivers at least part time for experience. I'd also save a bit for a suitable boat once you get here or rent several styles from Jeff at Alaska Raft & Kayak to find your stride.
In past years Alaska Raft & Kayak and myself Northern Rim Wilderness Adventures have posted a try/learn what you like before you buy program. It is not a joint venture and more a scratching of backs between retailer, manufacturer, and user of product. It is also not a class volume session and is more custom tailored to you the individual.
I will tell you it has helped folks make better informed purchases for their style of boating, and gotten people more comfortable right off the bat on do-it-youself boating vs. trial & error.
Best wishes -
Brian Richardson
