Some tips on narrow cat frames
Posted by Michael Strahan on Jan 21 2005
MH,
450 Hunter summed it up nicely. Call Tracey and he'll get you fixed up. You could do this yourself, but it's going to be really difficult if you're using the standard NRS yokes for cross-bars. If that's your situation, you should consider switching to straight cross-bars (just a simple pipe). That's what I use, and each cross-bar has an 18" sleeved removable section designed specifically so I can do what you're trying to do. It's really simple.
One caution; If you go this route, the footprint of your boat on the water will be much narrower. This will dramatically increase your tendancy to flip if you broach on a rock or a tree. It can be very dangerous! Still, on slow, narrow, Class I streams, this could be just the thing for you. It's not an uncommon request. As you suggested, you will have to adjust your oar length, and possibly the height of your oar stands / seat height. If you're using a floor, of course that will have to be narrower too.
Good luck!
-Mike
