CDory vs. Tolman Skiff
Posted by Ak Steve on Jan 16 2005
you might take a look at the Tolman made in Homer.  For the $$ you are going to spend on a CDory you could easily pick up a nice Tolman.
I saw a brand new standard Tolman with a small cabin at Ed Long's shop in Whittier last summer.  He was putting the power on it.  I didn't get a chance to talk with the owner as I was heading out, but it was nice.  Looked like something from one of those wild Coast Guard clips where they roll their boats over on purpose.
It had the St. Pierre Dory style bow, with a walk around cuddy that totally sealed the craft to about amidships.  The cockpit behind was self-bailing - no doubt one could take some serious water over the bow and cabin and into the cockpit without serious concern. However, the cockpit was such that  much of this spray would go over the rail before entering the craft. A very nice rig, able to take some nasty seas, but still lighweight, durable, and cheap to run.  Some of the stories I have heard are pretty wild.
