Yes you can do it...just don't be stupid.  The river can kick up waves too large for your boat to handle.  Just think about safety first and be ready to head for shore and wait out a wind. Don't allow your schedule to dictate your go/no-go decision.  Only think safety in that decision.  

Another thing...when it gets real choppy, it's a little harder to look ahead and find the channel.  But a little chop actually helps to see sandbars etc.
